Here is a yummy smoothie recipe that my kids threw together this morning all by themselves (I was there of course but just watching).  A “Magic Bullet” is a super conveinent tool for the kids to use and make smoothie prep easy for small hands.  If there is ever an argument for a surplus of berries in the freezer, this is it.

My Kids Favorite Breakfast Smoothie

Basic Smoothie Ingredients:

  • Vanilla peach yogurt – small single serve cup
  • 4 large frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup of soy milk, plain
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Healthy Add-Ins, choose one or two:

  • flax oil 1tsp per serving
  • wheat germ 1-2 tsp per serving
  • flax seeds (should be ground first) 1 tsp per serving
  • chia seeds 1 tbsp per serving

I wouldn’t add all four things to the same smoothie!  You might start to develop a taste of “too healthy.”  Especially for the kids.  My kids don’t like seeds in their smoothies — this includes raspberry seeds and flax, unless it is ground and they can’t detect it.  Quantities above made enough for one smoothie my 2 kids shared.

A note about Chia seeds!

I’ve just discovered theses little gems and I just love them.  They add protein and good fats.  Bonus! – you don’t have to grind them first.  Just throw them in. They sorta dissolve and add thickness and creaminess to the smoothie.  I think they are tasteless.    And because they dissolve the kids don’t mind them. Just a caution — keep them dry and make sure you don’t stick a wet spoon into the bag. I found a clumpy mess in mine from yesterday’s smoothie and had to throw a bunch out.  You should be able to find these at any health food store.  The Bulk Barn carries them. For myself I would add 2 tbsp to my smoothie.
